Hail damage roof repair and reroofing in Hays County (78666)

Hays County stretches from the limestone hills around Wimberley and Dripping Springs to the flat, fast-growing I-35 corridor through San Marcos, Kyle and Buda. That spread gives the county two very different roof markets. We work in both and size each recommendation to the terrain and the house.

Short answer

Across Hays County, roof needs split along I-35. Towns on the interstate, like Kyle and Buda, are full of 2000s and 2010s builder shingle roofs reaching first replacement, often after hail. West of the highway, Wimberley and Dripping Springs lean toward standing seam metal on custom homes and steep lots. The county seat, San Marcos, mixes older homes, rentals and newer subdivisions.

Which side of I-35 is your roof on?

Along and east of the interstate, Hays County is mostly new rooftops. Subdivisions in Kyle and Buda went up quickly, often with one shingle grade per phase, and many are reaching their first replacement at about the same time. Our Kyle roofing page and Buda roof repair page go into what we find in each town.

West of I-35 the ground climbs quickly. Around Wimberley and the Blanco River, custom homes and cabins sit on slopes under heavy tree cover, and standing seam metal is common. Those roofs need different staging, different fastening and different upkeep than a tract house in a flat subdivision a few miles east.

What the county seat adds to the mix

San Marcos holds the county courthouse, Texas State University, older homes near the square and a large rental market. Leaks in rentals, layered roofs on older houses and possible historic review all come up there. Our San Marcos service page explains how we work with landlords and owners who live out of town.

Permit rules differ from city to city across the county, and unincorporated land works differently again. Check with your city's building office before a reroof starts. We'll provide the scope, materials and contractor details any application asks for, so the paperwork doesn't hold up the start date.

How can you tell if a spring storm reached your part of the county?

Hail cells moving up the I-35 corridor can hammer one neighborhood and skip the next. Ground clues help: dents on mailboxes and gutters, shredded leaves under trees, and granules washing out of downspouts. Our guide to which hail sizes hurt a roof explains when those signs usually mean the shingles took hits too.

If you see them, get the roof checked before the next heavy rain. Small bruises let water reach the shingle mat over time, and an insurer will want damage tied to a dated storm. We photograph each slope and record the visit date so your file is clear from the start.

On the western side, hail tends to dent metal rather than crack it. Many Texas policies treat dents that don't let water in as cosmetic, so read your coverage before assuming a dented metal roof will be replaced.

Roofing questions from Hays County

Do you cover Dripping Springs and the western end of Hays County?

Yes. We roof homes around Dripping Springs, Wimberley and the ranch land between them, along with the I-35 towns. Western Hays County lots often have long drives and steep pitches, so we look at access before quoting. Metal roofs and larger custom homes are common out there, and we schedule those jobs with the extra staging time they need.

Are newer Hays County subdivisions more likely to need roof work after hail?

They often are, mostly because so many Hays County homes share the same age and shingle grade. When a hailstorm crosses a subdivision built in one phase, every roof on the street took the same beating with the same product. Builder-grade shingles also bruise more easily than impact-resistant ones, so we see clusters of replacements after a single storm.

Which roof material suits a Hill Country lot in western Hays County?

For most western Hays County homes, standing seam metal or a heavy architectural shingle makes the most sense. Metal sheds leaves and handles ridgetop wind well, while shingles cost less upfront. Tile appears on some larger homes but adds weight and needs careful underlayment. We'll compare options for your slope, tree cover and budget after looking at the house.
